How to Deal with Your Young Child’s Use of Tech

When you’re a parent, one of your major challenges is helping your child navigate the world in a safe and healthy way. These days, a big part of this is helping to make sure they use tech and the internet in healthy and positive ways, which is not always easy to do. There are lots of ways in which you can fall short and struggle with this if you’re not careful, but we’ve got some tips that should help you succeed.

Be Open and Communicative

First of all, you’re going to want to be as open and communicative as you possibly can be on this subject. It’s best that you talk openly about what the rules are regarding tech usage, as well as discussing the dangers of the internet to children when they’re old enough to have those conversations with you. Being open and honest is always the best policy.

Don’t Let Tech Impact Bedtime Routines

If your children are young and bedtime routines are still really important, you should make sure that the technology in the home doesn’t disrupt this at all. It’s very bad for kids to be starting at bright screens just as they’re about to try and sleep. So an hour or two before bed, you should shut off all screens and technology and wind down for the evening.

Make Tech Usage Social in the Family

When you do use technology in your home, you should do what you can to make it a social experience for the whole family. By doing this, you’ll be able to make sure that you don’t end up with each person in isolation starting at their own screen, but instead taking part in a social activity with the rest of the family. That’s the way it should be.

Remain in Control

No matter what, you need to be the person who remains in control. After all, you’re the parent in this situation and you don’t need to concede ground to your child too much. If you are not happy with the software they’re using, learn how to delete temporary files on mac and take back control. Your judgment is key here, so don’t be afraid to take action when you feel it’s necessary.

Encourage Playtime Away From Screens

There are so many benefits associated with playing and exploring for children. Sure, technology can play some part in this, but it’s much better for you to encourage outdoor play and play with friends because these types of play times are important as well. You can’t simply outsource all of that stuff to technology because that’s not right. They need to have experiences beyond screens and tech.

This is one of the major parenting headaches of today, so if you struggle to get it right to begin with, don’t worry too much because you’re not alone in this. It’s all about working towards the right ends and making sure that your child’s use of tech can be as positive and balanced as possible.
