How to Prepare Your Home for a Long-Haul Holiday

If you know that you are due to go away on a long-haul holiday, then you will know what an exciting experience this can be. You may feel as though you have so much ahead of you and that you are ready to embark on your new adventure. This may be the case but if you do not put the work in to try and protect your home then this could cause real issues for you in the future.

Cancel Deliveries

It’s so important that you reduce the risk of attraction by canceling your household deliveries. This could include your newspaper, your milk and anything else of the sort. You can also chat with your friend or neighbor to see if they can remove any free post from your home as well. The last thing that you need is to have a ton of letters building up in your letterbox as this could alert someone that you are not home. If you are worried about someone breaking into your home when you are on holiday then LifeShield may be able to help.

Open your Curtains

If you draw your curtains or if you shut your blinds then this tells other people that you are not home. It also makes it incredibly obvious that your property is empty. If you want to safeguard your home, then you need to open your blinds and you also need to keep your lights turned on where possible. If you want to take things to that next level then it may be worth setting up a home automation system. This will turn the lights on and off on a schedule, so it looks as though someone is home. This will really help you to keep your home secure when you are out on your adventure.

Burglars often look out for telltale signs that someone is away. You need to make sure that you mow your front lawn and you also need to water your plants. When you do this, you can give the impression that you have a well-maintained front. This also helps to give the impression that you are home as well.

Clear the Kitchen

It’s very easy for you to overlook your fridge and even your kitchen cupboards as well. Nobody wants to come home to a ton of moldy food. It is possible for you to freeze food if you are worried that they are going to expire when you are away and this is a great way for you to avoid throwing everything out. It’s also a good idea for you to wipe down your fridge as this will help to stop any odors from building up. If you are worried that you will forget about this then set a reminder to clear out the fridge before you leave. Fruit is very susceptible to fruit flies, so be mindful of this and throw away anything perishable like this. This is especially the case if you are going on a long-haul trip, so it is important that you keep this in mind.

You can avoid any unwanted energy usage by going to your thermostat and resetting it. When you do this, this will stop any heating from coming on and it will also stop you from heating an empty house when you are away as well. If you want to save even more money, then it’s a good idea for you to invest in smart heating. When you do this, you can easily combine it with your smart lighting and this is a fantastic way for you to get everything you need sorted out so it can be controlled remotely.

Call in a Favor

A lot of people don’t like asking for favors and this is completely understandable. You should note however that sometimes, you need to in order to feel more at ease with leaving your home. You could ask your neighbors to water your plants or you could even ask them to try and take in your mail for you. When you do this, you can then feel confident knowing that you aren’t going to have a huge build-up of documents and it is also a great way for you to ensure that you are not making your home a target for burglars.

Going away on holiday can be a fantastic way to relax. You do have to remember however to monitor the weather at home. If you know that your roof has some leaks then the last thing that you need is to go away and worry about strong bouts of rain. To avoid this, all you have to do is make any repairs you need before you go. You also need to look out for anything that could possibly blow over in gusts of wind. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to do, but it could save you from coming back to a disaster.

Of course, it also helps to check the weather forecast so you can see if there are going to be any freezing temperatures while you are away. If you do think that the temperatures are going to drop then you may want to look into getting your pipes insulated.

When you do this, you can stop them from freezing and it will also stop them from bursting as well. Little things like this may not seem like a big deal, but they can easily become disastrous if you leave them untreated.

So there are many things that you can do to try and protect your home when you go away on holiday. Most of them don’t take long to do and when you put the effort in, you will soon find that they can really help you to feel more confident in your trip. If you want to keep your home even more secure then you may want to think about renting it out, or even have a friend stay over. This is especially useful if you have pets, so do keep that in mind.
