As a parent, you have a lot of experience in dealing with children and all of the ups and downs of their daily lives. For most people, that ends when the kids get older and move out, but some people decide that they would like to pursue a career working with children.
It’s a great career because it’s so rewarding and you can use the skills that you learned as a parent. There are so many different jobs out there for people that want to work with children, but there are a lot of safety issues so there will be qualifications and training that you need to get before you can start applying for a lot of those positions. If you think that working with children is the ideal career for you, here’s how to get started.
The majority of jobs that involve working with children will require you to have some kind of safety-trained first. You’re going to be caring for other people’s children so it’s absolutely vital that you know how to keep them safe in any environment.
That means knowing what the potential dangers to a child can be and how to avoid them. Of course, as a parent, you’ll already know all of this stuff but it’s still important that you can prove you know how to look after children safely so you’ll need qualifications of some kind. It depends on the job that you’re going for so, before you apply, inquire about the safety training that is required for the job.
Getting first aid trained is always a good idea as well, so you can respond quickly if a child is seriously injured. It isn’t always a requirement for jobs but it will make you a more attractive candidate if you do have first aid and CPR training.
There are some great places like the Early Education Station that run specific courses on first aid and CPR for children. They also offer courses on general childcare as well which could help you when you’re applying for roles that involve looking after children. If you want to increase your chance of getting a job, you should look into doing some of these courses.
Once you’ve got the necessary training, you can start looking into some of the different jobs available to you.
Childcare is a great option for parents that want to work from home, especially ones that are still raising their own family. If you start up your own childcare business, you can run it from home and look after other people’s children. It’s a great way to earn some extra money from home without having to go back into full-time work.
Just make sure that you don’t overstretch yourself by taking in more kids than you can handle. Remember that safety is always the most important thing and if you’re trying to care for too many young children, it’s easy to lose track of them all.
If your childcare business is a success, you could even consider taking it outside of the home and renting out a location and hiring some staff. That way, you can start earning more money from your childcare business and turn it into a full-time career. It just depends whether that conflicts with your own family responsibilities.
Teaching is one of the most popular jobs out there for people that want to make a difference in children’s lives. It’s such a rewarding career because you can watch your students learn and grow and give them all of the tools that they need to succeed in life.
However, it can also be a very demanding job because even after school is finished, you still have to deal with all of the marking and lesson plans. You’re also going to get some difficult children so it’s not always going to be like looking after your own kids. But if you’re prepared to deal with all of the negative aspects of the job, it could be the ideal career for you.
If you’re going to be a teacher, you’ll have to get some extra qualifications. The majority of positions require you to have a degree as well as a teaching qualification on top of that, which can take you quite a while to get if you don’t already have a degree.
Even though you’ve already got the skills that you need to be a good teacher, you still need to have those qualifications which can be a problem if you’re considering a career change later in life. It’s still possible, but it depends whether you’re in a position to go back into education full time.
If you aren’t able to do that, you could still work in a school as a teaching assistant. Often, it’s a job better suited to busy parents because your work starts and ends with the school day. It’s up to you to assist in class and help the kids out but you won’t have to do any marking or lesson planning. Because the teacher is the one in control of the class and directs the learning, you don’t need the same qualifications and it’s a lot easier to find positions.
Child Social Worker
If you really want to make a big difference in children’s lives, becoming a child social worker is one of the best ways to do it. You’ll be working with a lot of children that are in vulnerable positions so it can be a very emotionally draining job but it’s so rewarding.
If you’re going to find a job as a child social worker, you’ll already need some experience working with children in some capacity and you’ll need to get a specific qualification as well. You can often take the qualification online so it’s a good option for people that are looking to change careers in later life.
These are all great career choices for parents that want to use their skills to get a job working with children.
