A healthy detox is a means of flushing all the toxins out of your body. It could be just what’s needed after a week of eating junk food or a heavy weekend of drinking, allowing your body to re-energize and get back to full working order. A detox can also make you feel fresh and alert – it could help you to concentrate, give you more motivation to exercise and all in all make you feel less drained. Here are just some of the vital ingredients of an effective health detox.
Processed foods take extra effort for your digestive system to process. Now is the time to go easy on your gut with food made only from fresh ingredients. Head down to your local market and load up on fruit and vegetables – these are certain to be chemical free. If you’ve got a blender, try making your own juices, smoothies, and soups. As for meats, keep these fresh too. Avoid anything in a jar or a can.
Stick to water
A healthy detox is a time to load up on water. In fact, making water your only drink for the week could be a good idea – it will help to flush out the toxins in your body without pumping in new toxins or sugar. Try to drink 8 glasses of water per day.
Eat anti-inflammatory foods
Certain foods have anti-inflammatory properties which are excellent for getting rid of swelling and bloating. Fish is an excellent option as it is full of omega-3 which directly helps to fight inflammation. Leafy greens and walnuts meanwhile are also great for beating inflammation. On top of this, you may want to try herbs and spices such as turmeric and ginger.
There are plenty of multi-vitamin supplements and detox kits that can be a great help whilst on a detox. Taking these supplements isn’t a license to start eating and drinking unhealthily – these methods of detoxifying should be used on top of a healthy diet. Try to go easy on these supplements as you can do harm to your body by overusing these.
Say no to stress
Stress will only continue to wear your body down when the entire purpose of a detox is to rejuvenate yourself. Stress helps to aid inflammation, makes muscles tired, negatively impacts sleep quality and slows down digestion preventing your body from getting toxins as easily. Try to avoid as many stress triggers as you can for the week – it could be worth taking the week off work and having no plans.
Get a good night’s sleep
It’s when we’re asleep that are body does most of its detox work – if you’re not getting enough sleep you won’t be giving your body a chance to repair itself. If you struggle to get to sleep, consider changing up your bedtime routine by doing away with bright screens, taking a hot bath and trying melatonin supplements. If you find yourself waking up a lot in the night or waking up too early, try changing your bedding so that you’re comfortable and at the right temperature – you may also want to try making changes to your bedroom environment such as improving air quality and investing in blackout blinds.
