We all know that sugar is bad for us, but we still indulge in a sweet treats from time to time, or we justify it to ourselves in other ways. We had a bad week, or it’s better than consuming alcohol, but, it’s still important to know that sugar is incredibly bad for you. While we know that it’s bad, what exactly, is it so bad to the point where it’s irreparable?
It Can Cause Cancer
The big thing about sugar is that it feeds every single cell in our body, and if we excessively consume sugar, it could possibly cause certain types of cancer. Breast cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer have been linked to a high amount of sugar intake.
It’s Terrible For Our Teeth
We know that sugar rots our teeth, but sugar is the only cause of tooth decay. The best way to highlight this is to look at a country with little to no sugar intake. Nigeria only experiences 2% of tooth decay. And while you can get dental bridges installed if a couple of your teeth are falling out, it’s still unpleasant to know that your excess sugar consumption actually caused your teeth to rot and fall out.
It’s Bad For Your Bones
If you are prone to osteoporosis, it’s worth avoiding sugar. A lot of people who are diabetic have a higher likelihood of bone fracture, and this is directly linked to excessive sugar consumption. While it’s not unknown that it causes diabetes, because your body begins to increase its resistance to insulin, diabetes has a direct impact, not just on your bones, but on your nerves, kidneys, heart, and eyes.
It AGEs You
Because something called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) causes damage to elastin and collagen, both found in your skin, the elasticity disappears based on the more sugar you consume. The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs you are building up.
It Could Cause Alzheimer’s And Dementia
Eating a diet high in refined sugars decreases the Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the brain. This is what helps to form memories, and this is something that is impacted early on in the development of cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s.
It’s As Addictive As Drugs
Because we view sugar as a potentially harmless thing in comparison to drugs, in fact, our brain releases the same chemicals whether we are consuming sugar or something somewhat stronger. Also, researchers have found out that they can use the same medications to treat sugar addiction as well as nicotine addiction.
And in addition to these, it makes you want to eat more. That’s the big problem with sugar, it increases our appetite. This is a direct cause of weight gain as well as the other health problems that are directly related, such as our gut health. It’s a very difficult journey to go sugar-free, but when you do, you will feel a lot better, not just in your body, but in your brain. It’s time to get off the sugar bandwagon and treat it as bad as alcohol and tobacco.
