We can all relate to the feeling of not getting enough sleep, it leaves us depleted, moody, restless and unable to focus. Now, if you’ve had a period of time where your sleep has been disturbed, such as by your child crying in the night, then you’ll know this groggy feeling compounds over time and becomes almost unmanageable to the point we feel so sleep deprived that we are close to tears.
We’ve all heard the importance of getting a good night’s sleep and we all know how impactful a lack of sleep can be to our daily lives, but we are often subjected to restless nights sleep or simply not getting enough sleep due to the business of our lifestyles.
There are a number of things you can do, such as to ensure an adequate flow of cool air is coming into your bedroom and that you are sleeping in the dark rather than basking in the yellow glow of street lamps outside your home. Then, with regard to the bed, there are things you can do such as to use comfortable memory foam pillows, mattresses and soft sheets that are comfortable and cool to sleep in.
Yet, even with the most comfortable bed in the world, today, with the stressful and busy lifestyles many of us lead we end up feeling so overstimulated that it can be difficult to unwind and fall asleep at night.
WHY IS SLEEP SO IMPORTANT
Sleep plays a vital role in our state of overall health and well-being. Therefore, ensuring you get enough sleep each night, that is deep sleep rather than light sleep, will help optimize your sense of vitality, energy levels, and physical health.
However, the quantity of sleep you get each night is not the only factor – indeed, the quality is equally important.
If you’ve ever driven on a long journey after a poor night’s sleep then you know how dangerous it can be, because our bodies do require adequate sleep to function, and if you are constantly not getting the right amount or quality of sleep, then the cumulative effects this has on the body can lead to chronic illnesses.
Indeed, sleep is vital to healthy brain function – meaning you will be more intelligent, or at least more alert which means you are able to access more of your intelligence having had a good night’s sleep.
When you’re sleeping, your brain gets a chance to rest, yet whilst resting, it’s also preparing for the day ahead and forming new neural pathways.
Sleep is the time your body has a chance to replenish, repair, and replace cells; it is, therefore, important for people with stressful or physically tiring jobs to get plenty of rest each night, otherwise, their bodies don’t fully recover, each day.
A further factor when this happens is that our immune system can become compromised which makes us more susceptible to illness.
In summary, getting enough sleep is incredibly important to your mental, emotional and physical health and the powerful effect of having a good night’s sleep shouldn’t be underestimated.
