Adulthood can be very tricky to try and navigate. You read up on it. You listen to how your friends are managing. You remember everything your parents taught you, even if it was just how to hoard plastic bags in case you needed them one day! But one of the hardest things to manage about being old enough to stand on your own two feet is staying healthy and happy whilst you do so.
It’s a delicate balance, and let’s face it, it always has been! It’s something a lot of us haven’t got to grips with, and feel like we never will, which only helps to get us down a little bit more. But when you think about it, there’s a lot of things a typically healthy adult manages to do day in and day out, that you also manage to. Sometimes, you’ve just got to change up your perspective a little bit, and let yourself believe you’re capable of taking care of yourself.

You’re Feeling Stable with Work
Work can get a lot of us down. If you’re someone who has to stand behind a counter for 8 to 10 hours per day, dealing with every kind of customer known to man, you’re going to go home exhausted and in no way looking forward to tomorrow. Similarly, if you’re in an office job, tapping away on a computer for most of the day, not being able to stretch your legs and feeling your back get worse and worse with aches, there’s a good chance you’re thinking of petitioning the boss for lunchtime aerobics in the break room. No matter where it is you work, there’s always going to be some elements of the job you hate, or that require you to go further than was originally stated in your contract…
So you get overworked, you’re quite possibly underpaid, and you’re not feeling too hot because of it. But if you’re someone who’s learned how to adjust to adulthood, or you’re doing a good job of learning, you know how you can recover from the woes of the working world, and you know the job you do doesn’t have to be everything to you.
You take naps when you get home, allowing your body to recharge. You make sure you get a line on with your friends, and have a good chat or arrange a night out at the end of the week. You have a hobby to turn to, as soon as you’ve finished grinding half the day away, and let yourself get lost in those small, creative pleasures everyone in the world needs. And ultimately, you feel a lot more stable about going back to work the next day.
You’ve Thought Long and Hard about Family
The family is something we all have experience with, whether we’re close to the people who raised us or not. And when it comes down to it, someone who’s being healthy and responsible about their adulthood is going to think long and hard about their own chances and opportunity for the family. After all, we’re all getting into relationships and feeling the want to settle down with someone else – why not let yourself think about the possibility of kids at the same time?
You don’t ever really want to spring a pregnancy on yourself, or your partner, especially if the both of you have other life plans you want to follow. And that’s a good thing to realize – it makes you a lot more proactive in your days! And let’s think a little more about your potential relationship history here: you’ve been regularly practicing safe sex, and you might have thought about abortion before, but overall, you know for definite whether extending your family is or isn’t on the cards right now.
Long story short, you know if you’re ready or not for further commitment, and the willingness to make sacrifices for another human being. When you think about it, that’s a very healthy position to be in.
You Can Take Time for Yourself and Not Feel Guilty
We all feel guilty in our lives. It’s one of the most powerful emotions known to man, alongside love or anger, and that makes it a huge motivator behind the things we do and say. If we feel guilty about not taking the time to visit our mum, we’re going to go overboard with flowers and cards and daily phone calls, despite not having the money or the real-time on our hands to do these things.
If a friend missed us on a night out, we’re going to make a real effort to never miss another hang out with them, despite how poorly we may feel in ourselves. All in all, if we feel guilty about something, there’s a good chance we’re going to act against our own self-interests.
Which is why it’s important for the mental health that you recognize when you’re feeling guilty, and stop yourself to examine why. Should you really be guilty about something? Or was it out of your control? Were your intentions behind missing something malicious, or just accidental? When you can walk yourself through your emotions, you’re going to feel a lot lighter, which is a serious help in trying to combat stress.

Being a healthy adult isn’t something you’re instantly great at. You learn as you go, and you find solutions that suit you. As long as you’re going to regular medical checkups, and you don’t miss your dentist appointments, in the grand scheme of things, you’re doing just fine!
